Figueroa made his debut in the fnal game of the season last year against Manchester United and did a fine job of marking Cristiano Ronaldo out of the match.

He has now been given a run of action in the pre-season games and it appears that Figueroa could well become the first choice left back at the club this season.

Bruce told the Wigan Evening Post: "We're delighted with Maynor. I think he is going to be a fine player for us in the long run. We had him here for five months last season - basically it was a case of parking him and letting him settle in.

"That is the way to do things with some players...let them adapt to what it's all about, and then get them more involved. We gave him his full debut against Manchester United on the final day of last season. He did really well that afternoon, and we will be seeing more of him this term.

"He has shown that he is not fazed by the Premier League and has the potential to do well in England."
