However, it is now expected that Real Madrid will be joined by Manchester United in a bidding war for the 24 year old who has had another top notch season with the Latics.

Steve Bruce is understandably disappointed to lose his star player, but feels it is now time for Valencia to prove himself at the very top.

He said: "I'll be devastated to lose him because how the hell do we replace him, but he deserves it. He is a great kid to work with; he's humble, a great athlete and he deserves to play at the highest level - which he will do.

"The size of clubs who want to try to take him is growing by the day and unfortunately for us he will go. It is out of my hands now. It is up to the powers that be to get the best deal possible."

It is rumoured that Valencia would prefer a move to Old Trafford in a deal which could see Frazer Campbell moving in the opposite direction.
