Bramble set for contract talks

The 27 year old defender has been in outstanding form for the Latics, and has even been tipped for a spot in the England squad.

Now, Steve Bruce doesn't want to run the risk of Bramble leaving on a free transfer at the end of next season.

He told the Wigan Observer: "Titus has 18 months remaining on his deal, and I will look at that over the nect two or three weeks.

"What you don't want to happen is for people to be entering the final 12 months of their contract for obvious reasons."

The Latics lost Emile Heskey to Aston Villa during the January transfer window as the England international forward had just six months of his deal remaining.

Bruce is also aware of how much Bramble has grown as a player following his years of ridicule at Newcastle. The defender has focussed much more on keeping his concentration and has formed a fearsome partnership with Emmerson Boyce at the back for the Latics.

Bruce added: "I remember when he fell over after 12 seconds of my first match here, and there were times I left him out last season, but it has focussed his attention and his concentration.

"I also think he has found a club he enjoys playing at. He has been, in my opinion, unfairly treated in the past. I know what the North East is like - once the get their claws into you they don't want to know.

"He was the butt of too many jokes at Newcastle but, fair play to him, he never ever let his head go down. When Wigan got him, I was trying to take him to Birmingham when I was manager there, because I believe centre backs get better.

"He was young when he went to Newcastle - possibly too young. If he was to go there now, I think you would see a totally different Titus Bramble.

"The problem with Titus was to keep him switched on, because by nature he is an easy going boy. I don't have to teach him anything - he knows the game. He just has to be made aware of what a centre defender does.

"We just had to simplify it and said: 'Your job is to keep it out of our net - head it or kick it - but you don't have to do anything clever or special. Keep it simple'. He has done that - and he deserves all the credit."
