City boss Sven Goran Eriksson said: "Elano is out unfortunately. He is taking a scan this afternoon and we don't know how long he is out for, but he is out for this game. It is a hamstring problem."

While Black's addition to the staff at Wigan does not mean the end for Frank Barlow who will also stay on at the club.

Mark Seagraves has left the club and will join Paul Jewell at Derby County, who are bottom of the table.

In essence, Barlow becomes the first team coach, with Black joining as assistant, and new reserve team boss Keith Bertschin also joins from Birmingham.

There was no news on the futures of Gary Walsh and David Lowe who are speculated to be joining Jewell at Derby.

Bruce said: "Every manager needs a team around him, and in Eric, Keith and Frank, I have got three highly experienced football people that I know and trust completely.

"They know the game inside out and are fantastic additions to my dressing room. I am absolutely delighted everything has been resolved now as regards the first team coaching set-up, and we can now settle down into a routine and move on.

"I would also like to put on record my thanks to Mark Seagraves for alll he has done for Wigan Athletic."

Jewell has also taken on former Burnley manager Stan Ternant. Jewell said: "Stan was my coach at Bradford and he has great experience, great knowledge - he knows the game inside out."
