He is now said to be the subject of a £4 million offer from the Latics as Steve Bruce aims to strengthen his forward line following the numerous injuries to Emile Heskey.

When asked to comment on the speculation surrounding King, assistant manager Eric Black said: "We've shown an interest and it's ongoing. Fulham are obviously interested as well, as are another couple of clubs because he's obviously done exceptionally well for Watford this season."

Speaking about the failed medical Black added: "You are obviously concerned with something like that. But if something did happen then we would obviously have to satisfy ourselves that it wasn't an ongoing problem and wouldn't be a problem in the future. Hopefully if we do get him then he could contribute between now and the end of the season."

From the other side of the fence, Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd said: "We've had contact from Fulham and also contact from two other clubs enquiring about the situation. I am hoping the situation will be resolved by the end of the week. Whether he plays for Watford, Fulham or the other two on Saturday I can't tell you."
