Bent wants to stay

No fee has been discussed about the move and Latics fans will no doubt have Northern charm Gemma Atkinson to thank for Bent's desire to remain in the North.

The 29 year old frontman said: "I have come to Wigan to play in the Premier League, try to score goals, and do well for the club and myself. It's up to Charlton and Wigan to sort out a deal. I would be happy to stay - the people on and off the pitch have been very good to me.

"Hopefully, I can keep up there in the goalscoring charts with some of the world-class players in there. My aim is just to keep working hard. Football might be a glitzy game now and high profile, but you've got to put in the hard graft. After the win over Blackburn and the draw at Fulham, we need to push on.

"We're at home on Boxing Day against Newcastle, and prior to beating Blackburn, we might have been a little scared of playing at home because of the results and the crowd not being happy. Hopefully we have turned that corner now. The crowd were happy after the Blackburn game and we are more happy as a squad after getting a couple of results."

Speaking about his in form striker, manager Steve Bruce said: "Marcus has been terrific since I walked through the door. He has done terrifically well and hopefully we'll have Emile Heskey back too for the Newcastle game on Boxing Day."

There is also good news regarding Bent's strike partner Emile Heskey who is set to return to the starting eleven for the game with Newcastle on Boxing Day.

The England international sat out the 1-1 draw with Fulham but has recovered from the ankle injury he sustained in the 5-3 victory over Blackburn Rovers.

Meanwhile, goalkeeping coach Nigel Spink is set to be joining the Latics from Birmingham after talks with new Blues boss Alex McLeish did not go well. Press officer Andy Maxey is also Wigan bound. Maxey handed his notice in on Friday at St Andrews. There is no news on the future of current goalkeeping coach Gary Walsh.
