Beattie interesting Latics

With youngsters Vaughan and Anichebe coming through the ranks to compliment Andy Johnson, the Toffees have deemed Beattie surplus to requirements at Goodison Park.

This has alerted Latics boss Chris Hutchings who fancies adding the striker to his squad in the hope that he can rekindle his past form at the club.

The Latics are certainly a club for re-invigorating the class of former stars and Beattie is said to be keen on regular first team football up front alongside England international Emile Heskey, and January addition Caleb Folan.

News has also broken of an agreed fee between the Latics and Preston North End for goalkeeper Carlo Nash.

Thrirty-three year old Nash spent a time on loan at the JJB last season and looks set to join the ranks this summer as he seeks to leave North End for top flight football.

Hutchings has made no secret of his desire to have three goalkeepers in the squad, and after John Filan's retirement this summer, Nash is a perfect replacement.

A fee of £300,000 is said to have been negotiated. Preston chairman Derek Shaw: "Carlo is due back at the beginning of next week. He will then meet Wigan on Tuesday, so we believe, where we expect him to finalise his personal terms and complete the move."

Meantime, Josip Skoko has been given until the end of the month to decide whether he is going to sign a contract extension with the club.

Manager Chris Hutchings said: "There will be a time limit and it will come to the stage where it will have to be sorted. It's the players prerogative to leave their options open and see if they can play one offer against another."
