....and has been rewarded for his brilliant campaign with improved terms and an extended deal.

Leighton Baines
Baines had another year to run on his current deal but the club moved quickly to secure the services of one of the countries outstanding defensive talents.

After being a virtually ever-present last term, he is a massive part of te long-term palns of manager Paul Jewell: "Bainsey has done magnificently in his short career so far. He has risen with the club from Division two, and has reall stood out in the Premiership. It's a massive step up in class required to stay afloat at this level, but he has taken to the Premiership like a duck to water and i know he can go on to have a long career at the top."

Leighton joined Wigan as a 16-year old, progressing through the youth system at the Latics and making his debute at the age of 18 in 2002. He established himself as Wigan's no1 left back the season after.

Baines has played 124 times for Wigan, and has won five caps for England Under 21's.

Speaking to the official website, Bainsey said: "I have always said i wanted to stay at Wigan. This is the club who gave me my chance in football and i wanted to repay the faith they showed in me with a bit of loyalty from my part."

"Wigan are an ambitious club and i hope that last season was just the start of things to come. I'm convinced we can continue to grow as a club and become and established Premiership team in the future."
