England boss McClaren has already hinted that he feels a number of the current under 21's are ready to be blooded in the full team, and he intends to use the Holland friendly as that opportunity.

Baines' Wigan team-mate and Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane had nothing but praise for the full-back. He commented: "Leighton is a quality player who has the ability to make the step up.

"He's a very clever player. I've struck up a good understanding with him on the left. I've seen him do well in training as well and he's a terrific talent. He's right on top of his game at the moment."

Newly signed goalkeeper Chris Kirkland is also expected to be named in the squad and could well push Paul Robinson for the number one jersey after his howler against Croatia.
