Speaking about the tackle, Latics boss Roberto Martinez said: "It was a red card. It was high. Big decisions against us seem to get forgotten too easily."

The Tottenham defender's tackle could easily have broken the leg of Di Santo who has thankfully escaped with only minor injuries.

Roberto Martinez couldn't understand why referee Lee Probert didn't show the red card, particularly given that he could clearly see the incident.

"I was shocked and surprised when Lee Probert didn't show the red card because he was in a great position." added Martinez. "We were very fortunate because Franco escaped the tackle with a minor injury and I've seen broken legs from (tackles like) that."

Di Santo now faces a race for fitness ahead of Saturday's visit of Everton.
