Akinbiyi Latest

The Latics boss is getting more and more frustrated in the transfer market, but he refuses to rush in and make a bad signing.

An initial bid, believed to be around £350,000 has been turned down by the Potteries club and Jewell is known not to want to go much higher as the former Leicester striker will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Jewell said: "I'm still waiting to hear back from Tony Pulis regarding Ade Akinbiyi. We've not made a new offer for the player but I have asked Tony to go away and come back to me with the figure that they are looking for for him. That's not to say that we will pay it, but it should give us an idea of where we stand with that deal.

"We have had one offered turned down for him so rather than go back in straight away I've asked the people at Stoke to let us know what they value him at. From there we'll see whether we can move forward with it. However, he is certainly a player I would like to bring here because he is quick and strong and works unbelievably hard for his team. I also like the fact that he never hides or shies away from a challenge and I think those are qualities that will benefit our squad.

Jewell also spoke of a loan target, believed to be Aston Villa's Peter Whittingham. Whittingham has today joined Burnley however, pouring cold water on that move.

No doubt Gary Cahill (curently on loan at Turf Moor) had some sway in the Under 21 international choice.

Whittingham is a young, wide midfield player who favours the left hand side - not a problem position for the Latics. Jewell is known to want a striker and Blackburn forward John Stead is rumoured to be a target.

He has fallen out fo favour with Hughes at Ewood Park.

"Aside from Akinibiyi, I also approached another manager on Sunday with regards to taking one of his players on loan. We've had a chat about the player and the manager is now thinking about it and has said he will let me know one way or the other later today. Obviously he's a player that I am keen on and I'm hopeful that we can reach an agreement for him to come here. We will have to wait and see though, the ball is in his club's court right now."
