Manager Paul Jewell has revealed the 'substantial' cash offer is close to the club record £5.5million paid out for Emile Heskey, but he has not given any clues as to who the player is or what position he plays.

"We have made a substantial offer for a player, almost a club record in fact," he told the Wigan Evening Post,""We are waiting to hear on that one.

I'm not going to say in what position the lad we are after plays, but we feel it would be a good signing for us.

"While we're trying to reinforce the squad, there might be one or two departures before the end of January."

Possible departees are Scottish winger Gary Teale, who has been linked with a move to Derby County. Fellow promotion hopefuls Preston North End have also been linked, so have mid-table Burnley.

David Wright has also been linked with a move away, despite the increase in first team games he has made. However, with Ryan Taylor almost ready to return, Wrighty's chances will be severly limited.

This has alerted Ipwsich Town, who have been linked with a £200,000 bid for the right-back.
