Preview: The Anfield Assault

Yes for some of our players, Saturdays game at Anfield means that little bit more to them.

For Emile Heskey it will be a sentimental return to the club where he averaged a goal every three games, and won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup, among other trophies.

The same can be said for unlucky Kirkland, who has made more appearances for Wigan in one season than he managed during his entier spell at Liverpool. Sadly for Kirk', he will not play again this season.

Neither will 'One size'. I will leave that up to you to decide if that is good or bad news.

Similarly, Lee McCulloch is ruled out of Saturdays encounter, meaning a certain start for former Evertonian Kevin Kilbane. Fo him, it is adding to his goal tally, which stands at one for the season after his great header last Sunday.

Paul Jewell also has to decide who partners Heskey (who is expected to be fit after a groin strain) up front. It could be that Jewell, a former Liverpool player and fan himself, hands January signing
Liverpool fan Folan
Caleb Folan his dream of playing at Anfield.

Folan, despite being from Leeds, is a lifelong Liverpool fan and although his favourite Liverpool player was John Barnes, he also feels he has benefitted from training and playing with former Red Heskey.

Folan said of his fellow striker: "Emile is a terrific striker who has done it at the highest level and I can learn so much just by watching him,"

He's so strong, he's talented and he's playing really well. I can't wait for Saturday's game. I guess there are not many lads from Leeds who supported Liverpool, but I did, and John Barnes was my hero.

I looked up to him as a youngster. I thought he was a fantastic player and watching him encouraged me to take up the game."

So the stage is set. A game many believe is damage limitation at best, and players who want to prove something at Anfield.

Only question is who, if anyone, will play the role of the Latics hero and fire Wigan safety?

Ones to Watch

Take your pick. Crouch and Kuyt are dangerous and captain Steven Gerrad can change a game with one kick of a football. Baines, who has been praised by former Liverpool left-back Alan Kennedy, will have his hands full with winger Jermaine Pennant, if he stays out of trouble long enough to play of course.

Pundits Prediction

Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson predicts a comfortable 2-0 win for the Reds but feels even with defeat Wigan have enough to stay up.

My Prediction

Even my blind faith is tested with this game. Yet to take a point from the top four, it could very well be damage limitation this Saturday. Even so....

Scousers 3 Latics 0

Blind faith says

Scousers 1 Latics 1
