Manchester City Preview: Jones ready for City test

The visit of Roberto Mancini's team will see top of the table face bottom of the league in front on the Sky cameras.

Momo Diame is a notable absentee for the Latics as the midfielder has joined up with the Senegal national team for the African Cup of Nations.

The absence of Diame will add further weight to the task faced by fellow midfielder Jones who is ready to step up.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post, Jones said: “It will be one of our toughest games of the season of course, and with each game comes different difficulties.

“But we’ve shown on a number of occasions this season that at home against the so-called top teams we can produce a performance and get the result.

“That’s what we’re after with this gme. The big thing with Manchester City is the fear factor for a lot of teams up against them.

“Just looking at their team sheet and their squad, and the amount of money they’ve spent, that can be a factor.

“But if we go into the game with that belief that we can compete with anyone football-wise then we can impose our game on City. We can live with them, that’s been proved in recent seasons, but we do need to get back to winning ways.

“After last weekend at Swindon we need to be stamping our authority on this game, and get back to the kind of result we were picking up around a month or so ago.”

Martinez meanwhile was keen not to add further pressure to striker Hugo Rodallega. The Columbian seems to be on his way out of the club either in January or the summer with a refusal to sign a new contract.

The Latics boss however still sees Rodallega as a key player for the Latics. He said: "Hugo has it in his DNA to rise to the big occasion. It is in his nature to relish these games against the top sides, and he has done it again and again. He loves to compare himself with the best in the world.

"It is something he has done with the Colombian national team and he has carried that on here, playing in the best league in the world.

"That is why Hugo always plays with a smile on his face. Even when the goals weren't coming, his attitude has always been faultless.

"But we have to be aware that we cannot always put extra pressure on him, to look to him to win games on his own. That is unfair, especially when he has had a bit of a stop-start season with injuries.

"But he is fully fit now, he has looked sharp in training and I think we will see the best of him in the second half of the season.

"Any player can have a dip in form - but in the last two Premier League games, Hugo has shown he has come out of his bad patch."

The Latics boss also commented that Roberto Mancini's team cannot be considered great until they have won trophies.

He added: "As a team what measures you as a good or a bad team is achieving things and winning titles.

"What Manchester City has done has been phenomenal. I know money has been important but to get a team out of the individuals is where the difficulty lies.

"They can win any competition they go into, and they have done a remarkable job but only time will tell how good they can be.

"Barcelona probably five years ago were in a similar situation, showing good signs.

"But you can only be measured as a great side when you win titles and that's probably the exciting times ahead for Manchester City because they are showing they have everything in place to win trophies."

Striker Callum McManaman is said to be pushing for a place in the squad, if not the first eleven, after his impressive performance against Swindon in the FA Cup.

Elsewhere, Emmerson Boyce is back to full fitness and Hendry Thomas has been tipped to replace Momo Diame in the middle of midfield.
