Carling Cup: Arsenal Preview

Last updated : 10 November 2008 By Michael Goodman

To reach this stage, Wigan have beaten Notts County and Ipswich scoring eight goals and conceding one. Compare this with Arsene Wenger's side who destroyed Sheffield United 6-0, the game is sure to be an exciting one.

This will not be an easy game, especially since Arsenal beat Manchester United 2-1 on Saturday, Wenger's men will be very high on confidence.

The season has been very indifferent for Arsenal so far with defeats to Fulham, Stoke and Hull but claiming a win against the Champions at the weekend will inspire the Gunners to push on and keep momentum by reaching the 5th round of the Carling Cup.

Wenger has a history of playing young guns in the early rounds of the cup and it could be the same this time around so expect a few changes and some unfamiliar names in the Arsenal starting XI.

Key players are missing for the Gunners anyway with Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin Van Persie likely to miss out with Theo Walcott doubtful.

Steve Bruce will be looking for more spark up front from Wigan after failing to break down a determined Stoke, Amr Zaki, Jason Koumas and Wilson Palacios are among the players the squad will be looking for in terms of creating a problem on Tuesday.

Wigan Team News

Emile Heskey limped out on Saturday and should be replaced by Henri Camara who will want to prove he still has got a part to play for the club.

If Bruce does make changes, Michael Brown, Paul Scharner and Daniel De Ridder will all be looking to play a part. Ryan Taylor might get a game but again it might be too soon for Erik Edman.

Arsenal Key Players

Lukas Fabianski - If Wenger plays his young guns then expect Fabianski to start in goal. The young Polish goalkeeper is highly thought of by Wenger and is regarded as a long term successor to Manual Almunia.

Johan Djourou - The young centre back spent 6 months under Steve Bruce at Birmingham last season and is a solid defender. Finds it hard to dislodge William Gallas and Kolo Toure but provides great cover if one of the pair is unavailable.

Aaron Ramsey - Much has been talked about with the young Welsh midfielder who has a fantastic future with Arsenal and Wales. The 17 year old has progressed from playing Championship football with Cardiff in January, to scoring on his Champions League debut away against Fenerbahce last month. He is a great talent at such an early age.

Carlos Vela - The Mexican has been on loan in Spain to gain a visa to England and is now eligible to play for the Gunners. Scored a hat-trick against Sheffield United in the last round and is a constant threat.

Prediction

If Wenger plays the young boys, Wigan have more of a chance. The game will be hard but the importance of a cup win for Wenger will be huge. If luck is with Wigan then there is a chance but I think Arsenal might scrape an entertaining game.
