Comment: Ten years ago we were playing Colchester on Saturday

Paul Jewell: Miracle Worker
This Saturday a win would put us 4th and in a champions league spot, albeit temporarily until Spurs and Bolton play, but could any wiganer imagine in their wildest dreams that so far on into the season we would be so high up.

We had various numptys from other clubs on the messageboard claiming that we were going to sink back in November – they are still waiting. The rise of Wigan Athletic has been highly publicised and with the Carling Cup final likely to sell out soon, the size of the club has also grown and the tag of ‘little Wigan’ could somewhat be lost within the next five years.

But lets not kid ourselves, as Wigan fans know well, anything can and anything will happen in football. Whether it be Wigan in Europe or the revelation that the West Ham board will go a day without using the word ‘Wigwam’. Seriously though, in 3 years time this club could be back on its backside in the Championship or league 1, I’m not saying we will but it’s just something to bear in mind when you are thinking of shouting “OH FOR F*** SAKE TEALE” or “BLOODY RUBBISH WIGAN”. We are very lucky to have the greatest English manager and also his assistant who is in my eyes an unsung hero, Chris Hutchings, the passion these two share for football has got us here today. I find it impossible to believe how people can still moan at Jewellsky and Hutch.

You also have to have a look at the teams we have beat this season; Sunderland, West Brom, Everton, Bolton x2, Newcastle x 2, Villa, Fulham, Portsmouth, Charlton, Man City, West Ham and Arsenal. Some achievement isn’t it.

It’s almost a compliment when opposition fans have a go when we lost, it means they think we should have won. Like for example when we lost to Liverpool, ‘our bubble had burst’! Did they think that little old Wigan should be beating Liverpool? Scary to think how much other people think of us. They don’t think we’re crap at all, in fact they think we’re better than we actually do.

Enjoy the game on Saturday and remember, it is a must win game!

God Bless Wigan Athletic.
