Opinion: Whelan plans to spend big

Julius Aghahowa: Linked with move abroad
Whelan's comments follow on from the Latics' great 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Monday, it would be understandable to think that Whelan would be less willing to put his money into the club. However this is not the case as Whelan is set to look at £7m rated players to help establish the club and push towards mid-table mediocrity.

Such moves would be a whole £2m more than Wigan's current transfer fee record of £5.5m paid two years ago for Monday night's hero and England International, Emile Heskey.

There are rumours building as to whether the transfers this summer will be of quantity or quality as Bruce gets his first great opportunity to mould the team to his liking. Although, with Wigan's great form since Bruce arrived it's more likely that the majority of the squad will stay intact.

The Latics are rumoured to be looking to fill a number of roles which need strengthening. The priorities lying in attack as Wigan look to build on the goals tally which is only worsened by that of Paul Jewell's relegated Derby County. As well as a striker the club is looking to build on the midfield with backup players across the midfield possibly coming in.

It looks as though Bruce will be looking to rid the team of the deadwood players with underperforming African duo Salomon Olembe and Julius Aghahowa set to be moving to the Turkish Turkcell Super Lig. Aussie veteran Josip Skoko is an almost certain export as the ageing midfielders Visa, and contract, expire this summer.

With only 4 games to go in the season it won't be long before Wigan supporters can enjoy a hopefully fruitful close-season from Bruce's, Whelan-financed transfers.
