Opinion: AJ the Answer

The potential signing, which would break the transfer record for Wigan - currently £5.5m for Emile Heskey, has been met with differing response from Latics fans.

The once top scoring Barclays Premier League Englishman had come close to signing for Wigan in their second season in the top flight. The player having visited to the club to discuss terms, before Everton snuck in with an £8.6m bid to sign him.

Two years later 'AJ' could finally be wearing the blue and white of Wigan for a princely sum at least £1.5m more than the price agreed to sign him from Palace.

Many fans believe that Johnson's record of 38 goals in the 3 years he's played in the top tier along with the potential partnership with Emile Heskey could mean he is the answer to Wigan's goal scoring problems.

Johnson could well be the player to put away the chances created by Heskey, who many consider one of the best target men in the business, as he is in the same build as former prolific Heskey partner and former Wigan target, Michael Owen.

With Johnson believed to want to stay local to Merseyside Wigan are certainly the favourites to sign the speed merchant however both manager, David Moyes, and the player have expressed their desire to keep AJ an Everton player.

Moyes who is believed to be now willing to let the player go to fund his own imports had originally put to bed such rumours "Andy Johnson is not for sale - it is that simple.

"He is a highly-valued member of my senior squad and I look forward to seeing him when the players report back for pre-season training," said Moyes.

However a double figure bid is likely to sway his mind. Despite being days into the transfer market the race to sign a striker is already proving to be a difficult task for manager Steve Bruce.

The saga surrounding Egyptian striker Amir Zaki is becoming more complicated by the day whilst re-surfaced rumours of Croatian hit man Ivan Klasnic signing for the club have again been put to bed.

One signing which does seem likely to happen however is that of Birmingham's French winger Olivier Kapo who could possibly be part of a player - plus - cash offer involving either Antoine Sibierski, Kevin Kilbane or most unlikely, Ryan Taylor.
