Times Column: Hutch Revolution

Hutch Revolution
New manager Chris Hutchings had been given no chance what-so-ever by the football public outside of Wigan, but his side have won over neutrals with their performances of quality football in the opening three fixtures of the season.

In particular, the two home fixtures against North East teams at the JJB Stadium have been most impressive. Saturday's victory over Sunderland ranks amongst the top displays by a Wigan Athletic side.

There was a verve, swagger and confidence about the display. A poor opening fifteen minutes apart, the Latics dominated and should have had three penalties in the first half alone.

After the Middlesbrough victory, many questioned whether it was 'Boro who were poor, or simply the Latics who were (to quote Chris Hutchings) "awesome." To go and beat Sunderland convincingly has confirmed that it is little Wigan who are performing well.

Roy Keane's men have been no push-overs in the opening fixtures which have included a 1-0 victory over the much fancied Tottenham Hotspurs and a credible draw with Birmingham.

The quality of the football is what pleases most supporters. Under Paul Jewell we were very much a kick and run team that Sam Allardyce would have been proud of. But under the Hutch, our game has expanded phenomenally and if the team keeps up this level of performance then the various television networks will regret the Wigan abstinence that sees us ignored by the domestic channels.

All that is missing now to give Latics fans a perfect August are two quality additions before the close of the transfer window and a result away at Upton Park next weekend. Stranger things have happened.
