1) Emmerson Boyce

After joining in the summer from Crystal Palace, Boyce struggled at right back, and couldn't fill the shoes of Pascal Chimbonda. The 27 year old defender has since gone on to show that whilst he may now posses the attacking prowess of his French predecessor, he certainly lacks nothing in defensive quality.

Boyce has become an integral part of the Latics defence, producing his best play at centre back. His pace and strength in that position have been an asset that the Latics had lacked for some time.

Congratulations Emmerson.

2) Emile Heskey

Many eye-brows were raised when the Latics signed Emile Heskey for £5.5 million from Birmingham City. While the fee may have been a little on the expensive side, Heskey has produced some impressive performances, no fewer than in his previous five games.

This season could well see the big target man hit ten goals for the season, and when this figure is supported by his excellent team play, it is understandable why Emile has earned your votes.

A big presence on the pitch, Heskey has helped to carry Henri Camara for the season, and has even led for the chairman, Dave Whelan, to call for his re-selection for the English national team.

Congratulations Emile.

3) Leighton Baines

A home grown talent, and clearly a fans favourite, Baines has had another good season for the Latics. His recent form may not have been the best, but two terrific strikes have been the high point.

Perhaps the best of those coming against Manchester United back in October. At just 22 years of age, Baines is clearly has a good future in the game, and many Wigan fans will hope he chooses to stay with the club.

International honours at under 21 level have been earned, and the left back is tipped for a place in the full eleven in the near future.

Congratulations Leighton.

Young Player of the Season: Leighton Baines
Young Player of the Season

1) Leighton Baines

At just 22, Baines has a big future in the game, and it is somewhat unsuprising that he has been named as the Young Player of the Season. That is taking nothing away from the other young players in the squad, and is instead simply a measure of how important this young man is to our side.

First choice left back, Baines, who has been off form recently, has produced some quality performances throughout the season. He has really grown up this year and displays a welcome maturity on the pitch.

Full international honours are surely not too far away on the horizon.

Further congratulations Leighton.

2) Ryan Taylor

A welcome return to the first eleven for Ryan Taylor. After his move from Tranmere two summers ago, the full back has struggled with bad injuries and has done well to return in such fine fettle this term.

Pushing for the regular right back spot, Taylor has been included in the England under 21 squad at times this season.

Possessing a lethal right boot, corners and set pieces are much more dangerous when he is on the pitch. Not only a competant player defensively, but Taylor supports the attack well when going forward.

Another player with a bright future in the game.

Well done Ryan.

3) David Cotterill

A £2 million summer signing from Bristol City, Cotterill made a good start to his Wigan career and almost managed cement his place in the first eleven. He has spent much of his time in the first team on the right flank, and despite falling out of favour recently, the young Wales international hopefully has a bright future with the club.

Congratulations David.

Most Improved Player: Josip Skoko
Most Improved Player

1) Josip Skoko

Despite a slow start to his Wigan career Josip Skoko has taken his chance in the first team. After the departure of Jimmy Bullard and Graham Kavanagh in the summer, Skoko has grown into the midfield.

Some poor form recently has hampered a good season for the Australian international, but his judgement and positional play have been important in the midfield this season.

Congratulations Josip.

2) Emmerson Boyce

The Player of the Season took his time to settle into the squad. It was hoped that he would fill the shoes of the departed Pascal Chimbonda, but the former Palace right back is a completely different player.

With a chance in role, came a changed player and Boyce has become the integral part of the defensive line-up. His pace and strength have been very important to the central defensive for the large part of this season.

A quick recovery from cracked ribs has also shown his commitment to the cause and won Boyce a place amoungst the hearts of the Wigan crowd.

Well done Emmerson.

3) Ryan Taylor

After recovering from two bad injuries Ryan Taylor has finally had the chance to show his potential. A lethal right boot is complemented by a mature attitude and presence on the pitch.

Hopefully, the former Tranmere right back will be able to stay injury free and get his chance to shine in a Wigan Athletic jersey for the future.

Congratulations Ryan.
