Opinion: What price a goal?

Roberto Martinez is spot on in his illustration that from general play the Latics are putting in good performances and causing the opposition problems. The football at Wolves was good and we caused them no end of trouble.

The issue is, we cannot score for love nor money, and we're worryingly leaky at the back. The number of clear cut chances on display against Wolves was frightening, with Hugo Rodallega in particular guilty of missing too many.

With Di Santo's record particularly dry and Rodallega stuttering so far this term now is the time to give Conor Sammon a real chance to prove himself. Whilst he may not ave the silky skills or his latin counterparts, the big Dubliner offers pace, power, and a direct route to goal, just what is needed at the moment.

Then there is the leaky defence. With Alcaraz set for a spell on the sidelines and Gary Caldwell being found out at this level, the Latics are left with an urgent need to put Steady Eddie Emmerson Boyce at centre back to sure things up.

Ali Al-Habsi must be particularly frustrated with his defence who seemed rooted to the floor at times as shot after shot was fired in at the Omani from close range at Molineux.

For all the good things that the Latics are doing in general play, there is a ruthless streak needed in front of goal, at both ends, to ensure that the ball hits the back of the right net.
