Opinion: United can stick their favour

However Wigan Athletic fans will remember back to Sundary 13th May 2007.

As the Latics travelled to Sheffield United, Manchester United faced West Ham United at home. Sir Alex Ferguson's side could have done Wigan Athletic, Sheffield United, and football in general a favour by winning against the Hammers, but they didn't.

Instead they allowed Carlos Tevez to run the game and only the fact that our fate was in our own hands saved us that day as Sheffield United were relegated purely as a result of Manchester United. Sir Alex should have left things in his own hands if he wanted to win the league this season.

Only David Unsworth's historic penalty kept the Latics up that season and only a miracle will win the league for United this year.

It was just last season that a late Emile Heskey goal at Stamford Bridge played a big part in the title race. It is too much to ask for a second season running, especially given the lack of returns on these favours.
