The Latics have been stuttering in recent weeks and are sat at the wrong end of the table. Despite so much to look forward to in pre season the results have not matched the performance levels.
Bad luck partnered with ill timed international breaks, injuries, and suspensions and the Latics have struggled to get any kind of momentum going so far this season.
The return of Franco Di Santo from a calf muscle injury played a big part in the combative draw with Everton at the weekend.
The performance was worlds away from the dismal dross served up in the preceeding home defeat to Fulham. The Cottagers ran away with all three points and the Latics showed little fight or determination to argue.
An away day to the North East and a dodgy referee later and Roberto Martinez's side were completely different. The organisation and team work from the back enf of last season is starting to rear its head with every player working tirelessly for the cause.
Make no mistake this Everton team is a good one and will prove hard to beat for any team so for the Latics to be in the lead twice is no mean feat. It took heroics from former Latics full back Leighton Baines - the best full back in the top flight - to earn a point for the Toffees.
No small part of this turn-a-round can be credited to Franco. The youthful Argentinian was visibly hungry on his return to first team action and his pacey style of play beautifully complemented the power of Arouna Kone.
With Shaun Maloney linking the whole piece to midfield and the two James' back in partnership where they belong the Latics look like a force that could go places this season.
Strength-in-depth in the centre of the field in a clear weakness with niether Watson nor Jones capable of performing to the levels of McArthur and McCarthy, but I stand by my remark that the best eleven at Roberto's present disposal is the best any Wigan Athletic manager has had.
