Opinion: Moses must be given starting role

The nineteen year old winger's arrival part-way through the game with West Bromwich Albion changed the entire demographic of the game.

The first half performance from the Latics was a little laboured as Tom Cleverley and Charles N'Zogbia were left battling on their own to get attack's going.

Gomez

By no means am I going to slate Jordi Gomez. It is fair to say that I am not his biggest fan but the Spaniard is a talented footballer.

What he doesn't have is the application to be able to play in a Wigan Athletic team.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal etc... do not carry players who despite all their attacking flair and quality are not prepared to defend.

With Jordi Gomez in the Wigan Athletic team, that is exactly what the Latics are opting to do.

In a game against a side such as Liverpool, or a six-pointer against West Bromwich Albion, Roberto Martinez cannot afford this.

Should Gomez decide that he is going to apply himself defensively, aswell as offensively for the Latics then he could be a very good player for the club. Until that day dawns, he will never become a favourite amongst the Latics faithful.

Moses

Rather than focus on the negative, it is perhaps more important to focus on the performance of Victor Moses. The former Crystal Palace winger must be given a start at Old Trafford.

His pace on the counter attack left West Brom exposed as they struggled to cope with the trio of Cleverley, Moses and N'Zogbia, spearheaded by a real goal threat in Hugo Rodallega.

At just nineteen years of age, the England under 21 international has shown great patience during his time on the substitutes bench, but his performance and goal yesterday must be enough to earn a recall to the starting line up for next weekend's trip to Old Trafford.

Moses came on at half time with a real hunger to impress the Latics manager nad cannot be left out of the starting line up after a game turning performance that earned a valuable three points for the club.

His finish alone showed just what class and quality Moses has in his locker.

Tale of two halves

It was very much a tale of two halves, or players, yesterday. The first was slow and uninspiring, the second was dangerous and full of pace. I'll let you decide which is which...

As a side note, it must be mentioned that Hendry Thomas was again superb for the Latics. The Honduran is really growing into his role in front of the back four.
