Opinion: McArthur deserves increased role

McArthur has found first team opportunities hard to come by since joining from Hamilton Academicals last summer but he is certainly up to speed with the Premier League this term.

The 24 year old has proven with his displays this season that he offers more than just the terrier-like defensive approach to the Latics midfield. He is cultured in possession and suits the
footballing flow of our attacking football.

It was no surprise to see McArthur start at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City. For all the guile and skill of Gomez, the Latics could not afford to carry a player who refuses to defend. McArthur on
the other hand showed he is more than capable when in possession, and offers a great deal more when the Latics are without the ball.

Midfield is an area that now looks particularly strong for Roberto Martinez. Alongside McArthur the squad is blessed to have Ben Watson, Momo Diame, James McCarthy, and new addition David Jones.

The increased stability around the club is certainly helping such matters as players like McArthur are able to settle in and focus on their development before worrying about the pressures of first team
football. The young Scot is hopefully going to be added to the list of Martinez success stories.
