Opinion: Martinez asking for blind support

He also spoke after the 1-1 draw with Everton of his pleasure with the level of performance achieved by the Latics.

If 45% possession and one shot on target makes for a pleasurable performance then it is going to be difficult to avoid the temptation to criticise.

Even when gifted with a fortuitous lead by Tim Howard, the Latics couldn't hold on for the three points. In fact it took Everton just seven minutes to find an equaliser.

The Latics were devoid of ideas for the entire duration of the first half. Why three centre backs were adopted against an Everton side plying one striker leaves much to be desired.

There were then the gaping holes in front of the defence as young and old James (McArthur and McCarthy) where over-run in the centre of the pitch.

Both Jordi Gomez and Victor Moses were lazy spectators on the pitch, leaving Franco di Santo looking woefully isolated as a headless chicken chasing around up top.

This was endured for over an hour before any changes were made and the majority of the crowd had already fallen asleep. Even those with insomnia were starting to nod off.

It is clear that Martinez is trying to build a siege mentality at the club, but with the Latics now five points adrift at the foot of the table he would be better served focusing on delivering a performance that troubles the Bolton goal on Saturday.

The game against the Trotters is now a real crucial game if the Latics are to survive this season. Defeat is unthinkable.

We need to go back to basics. We need to defend well, work as a team, and be very hard to beat. We need to stop conceding so many goals and we need to be far more direct, quick, and dangerous in attack.

The present squad has the players to crack a very poor Bolton outfit, but we need to ditch the la-di-daa chitter chatter. It is time to stop talking a good game and time to actually play a good game.
