Opinion: January is very important

Last updated : 31 December 2009 By Paul Farrington

Charles N'Zogbia is the latest name today to try and engineer a move away from the club as he shows his true mercinary colours.

Both he and Hendry Thomas appearred disgusted as they left heh Old Trafford pitch yesterday evening.

Not only were the Latics out classed but they lacked the desire and professional will to put up a fight.

Defeat at Old Trafford is expected, but the lack of will was alarming. It is that smae lack of will that caused the Latics to be humbled 9-1 away at Tottenham and dumped out the Carling cup at the first time of asking by Blackpool.

Martinez on the other hand seems rather more upbeat. Despite the ever weakening league position of the Latics, the Spaniard seems desperate for January where he can bring in players capable of adopting his total football style.

He is keen to stress that there will be additions. Perhaps next month will be one of the most important periods for the club.

The bigger clubs have already begun circling for the better players within hte Wigan ranks, and should past history be anything to go by, we will fold without much of a fight.

Paul Scharner, Charles N'Zogbia, Maynor Figueroa and Hugo Rodallega could all be leaving in the window and this will provide as much a task as any additions for the Latics boss.

Where we need to strengthen

In terms of additions, nothing short of five players are needed, and that is aside from any big departures we may suffer.

Ben Watson and Won-Hee Cho are both set to leave the club, whilst Richard Kingson departs for hte African Cup of Nations. Vladimir Stojkovic has been brought in as Kingson's cover until May.

Elsewhere, It is clear for all to see that we need at least another striker to support Hugo Rodallega. The Columbian is the only regular source of goals for the Latics and we really need another striker to help take away some of that burden. Jackson Martinez from South America has been linked, but a proven player such as James Beattie would be more than welcome.

Victor Moses of Crystal Palace is another expected addition. The 18 year old winger/striker is likely to leave Palace given their financial troubles and would be more than welcome at the DW.

Meanwhile the defence needs shoring up after shipping the same number of goals away from home as newly promoted Burnley, a team who notoriously do not travel well.

It is remarkable that the same water tight defence from last season has become so leaky this. The open and attacking style of play clearly does not help, but the hard backbone of the team has gone too soft.

Waldo Ponce of Velez Starsfield is expected to join as a centre back, but again there will surely be a settling in period.

Mario Melchiot is starting to look more like a spent force as the season goes on and Erik Edman is not able to cover for Maynor Figueroa.

Michael Ball is expected to join as cover whilst Edman is likely to depart for Holland.

Then there is the defensive midfield. First choice are gonig to be Diame and Thomas in the defensive positions whilst Paul Scharner has been excelling in the attacking role.

A big cause of concern is that the aerial prowess of Paul Scharner seems to be an ad-hoc form of attacking to make up for the lack of aerial presence up top. Surely an addition such as James Beattie would eliminate the need for Scharner to play in such an unfamiliar position?

An Emile Heskey type striker is needed.

The other hope is that Martinez can manage to offload some of the dead weight that the squad is carrying.

Jason Koumas, Olivier Kapo, Daniel De Ridder and Rachid Bouaouzan are all big wages drains that have been inherited by Martinez. Nobody wants to buy them because they are useless and these are players who will among the top in terms of wages, proving a real hinderence to any manager.

In reality a large overhaul is needed but that is very unlikely to happen in the January window. It is more likely that we will be patched up to limp our way to survival once more in the summer.

The real optimism must be that come the summer when the transfer merry-go-round hits full speed, Martinez is allowed to go out and bring in the players that his system is crying out for.
