Opinion: How Many More Points Can Wigan Get?

Last updated : 16 April 2013 By Thomas Rooney

The Latics have the small matter of an FA Cup semi-final appearance to focus on before attention turns to the league again, but let’s be honest, everyone would swap silverware for survival wouldn’t they?

Anyway, with a break from the relegation scrap, it seems a good time to look at how many points Wigan can muster between now and the end of the season. Then, will it be enough?

The draw against Queens Park Rangers on Sunday felt like a win of course, such was the lateness of Shaun Maloney’s equaliser.

Then again, Wigan were facing ten men for the majority, so it was also a chance for three points. This highlights, once again, the unpredictability of the Premier League and the fine margins between success and failure.

Regardless, we are going to give some predictions a go, simply saying how many points – if any – the Latics will get from each of their remaining Premier League fixtures. Let’s do it.

Wigan are currently on 31 points and this list shows how many points we think they will be on after each fixture.

Man City (a) - 31 points

West Ham (a) – 32 points

Tottenham (h) – 33 points

West Brom (a) – 34 points

Swansea (h) – 37 points

Arsenal (a) – 37 points

Aston Villa (h) – 40 points

Presuming 40 points is enough –it could be more it could be less – there is no doubt whatsoever that the final game of the season against Aston Villa could end up being the decider.

The other winnable home game is against a Swansea City side who have little to play for, while we have backed Roberto Martinez’s men to get a point against Tottenham and West Brom.

The key could be picking up unexpected wins. Last season, it was successive Premier League wins in April, defeating Manchester United and Arsenal.

Given how tight it is, this might be needed again, especially if Wigan fall short of their best on the final day. Maybe a win at the Emirates will be the catalyst once again?

Ideally it will all be sorted by the Villa game, but the way things have been over the last few years, it seems inevitable that the hardest path will be chosen.

How many points do you see Wigan getting between now and the end of the season?
