Opinion: Freebies - will we ever learn

Last year was the free departure of Momo Diame and Hugo Rodallega who combined featured very little after January when the pair could have been offloaded for around £8-10million.

Out Of Contract, June 2013

Albert Crusat

David Jones

Franco Di Santo

Roman Golobart (signed 3 year contract at FC Koln)

Maynor Figueroa (signed 2 year deal with Hull City)

Filip Orsula

Adrian Lopez

Ryan Watson

Mike Pollitt (possible goalkeeping coach for us next season)

Ronnie Stam

Antolin Alcaraz

And if that wasn’t bad enough, we’re also losing 2 first team regulars from the second half of last season who played a big part in our FA Cup journey.

Loan Deal Ended

Paul Scharner

Angelo Henriquez

Joel Robles

Ryo Miyaichi

So that’s 15 players we are down already with Callum McManaman and Ivan Ramis who are both likely to miss pre-season due to injury. With names such as Shaun Maloney, Arouna Kone, Jordi Gomez and James McCarthy all being linked with moves away from the DW Stadium it shows what a tough job Owen Coyle has – not to mention many Wiganers who already want his head.

All is not lost yet though with Dave Whelan promising upto 10 new arrivals before the transfer window comes to a close. Chris McCann who was released by Burnley recently has been rumoured to be someone Coyle wants to bring in, though we are likely to face competition from Hull City and Crystal Palace. Let’s hope we don’t leave it until the last minute again, will Wigan ever learn.
