Opinion: Form table points to survival

Last updated : 02 April 2012 By Paul Farrington

During the dark months of September, October, and November the Latics bounced from defeat to defeat. This was a run of results that lead to the relegation fight that is ongoing today.

The Latics were forced to pay catch up and only now are the signs looking wholly positive that we ar realistically capable of making the jump out of the bottom three.

Despite spending most of the season in the relegation zone the only thing that matters to Wigan Athletic supporters is that the club are out of the relegation zone at the end of play on the 13th May.

With Wolves seemingly cut off and already relegated, the recent wins against Liverpool and Stoke City have given the Latics a renewed sense of belief that survival is achieveable.

Roberto Martinez confidently speaks upon the subject safe in his own knowledge that his team has what it takes to stay up.

Swansea aside, recent performances have been of a very high standard and have offered a consistency that should stand the Latics in good stead as the season reaches its climax.

That consistency and resolve will now be severely tested over the immediate three fixtures with Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal looming large.

However this is a Wigan Athletic team that has shown amazing belief and self confidence in recent weeks and should performances be maintained there is no reason why we cannot pick up victories against those three sides.

Stoke City represented only our second home win of the season but could well be the start of a home sequence that plays a big part in our season.

The players were evidently relieved to get the vital home win and there was a confidence and swagger about the display that suggested we are a team capable of survival.

Our next three games are gonig to be very difficult, but it is at such difficult times where you learn the most about yourself and those around you.

We have what it takes to survive and the support of the Latics fans was high on Roberto Martinez's list when supporters met with his this week.

Let's make sure we do our bit as supporters over the closing weeks of the season and hopefully the players will deliver the points to guide us to survival.

Believe.
