Opinion: Di Santo starts to impress

However the young Argentine could well be about to bloom under the man-management of Roberto Martinez.

Following the departures of Charles N’Zogbia and Tom Cleverley there is a sizeable gap in the Wigan Athletic attacking line and Di Santo looks keen to step up to the plate.

Despite scoring just four first team goals in the Premier League, Di Santo is no stranger to goal scoring. During his time with Chelsea he netter 12 goals in 8 games for their reserve team, a run which included a hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur Reserves.

Clearly a player who thrives on action and confidence, Di Santo has started the season very well indeed. He has added an edge of quality to his usual huff and puff running attack.

Whilst Neil Warnock was at pains to point out the deflections that aided Di Santo’s goals on Saturday, it was equally clear to the Wigan support the problems that Di Santo’s athleticism and energy caused the Q.P.R. defence.

The lone role up top is never an easy furrow to plough, but Di Santo offers bundles of energy and free-running which make it easier for his team maters to play the right pass.

He also looked equally comfortable switching to the wide positions which allowed for some very dangerous inter-positional play with the wide men of Hugo Rodallega and Victor Moses.

Both Moses and Rodallega are happy to move into the front role and this inter-change of position causes no end of problems for opposition defences.

With the transfer window all set to close today, perhaps one eye should be focussed on what we already have in the squad. A tall, strong, quick, 22 year old striker capable of scoring goals when confident, how much would one of those cost in the present market?

We could already have one right under our noses...
