Opinion: Coyle deserves backing

The former Burnley and Bolton boss is now in charge of the Latics for the next twelve months after his appointment last week.

Whilst it is fair to say that the negative reaction is to a degree understandable, it is equally fair to say that some of Coyle's achievements are being over-looked here.

In short our chairman saw Coyle's CV and after an interview process thought him the best priced candidate for the job.

Mr Whelan remarked that some of his other choices were at clubs already and would have required sizeable compensation payments. Perhaps a hint at MK DOns Karl Robinson, or Brighton's Gus Poyet, but it doesn't matter now.

What does matter is that we have Owen Coyle in charge of our promotion chase and European adventure next season.

He took Burnley from the Championship into the Premier League in his first full season in charge and in the process signed Steven Fletcher (yes the one presently at Sunderland) for £500,000 from Hibernian.

The 1-0 victory over Sheffield United in the playoff final meant that Burnley were to play top flight football for the first time in 33 years.

Furthermore he was making more than a fair first of keeping the Clarets in the top flight.

That was until he joined Bolton in what proved to be an ill-fated move. After an indifferent first season with the Trotters, Coyle was to suffer relegation following a bad run of injuries to key players (not too disimilar to our own defensive injury woes this season).

This was also the same season that Fabrice Muamba suffered his on the field heart attack. An event that shook the foundations of football and in particular Bolton Wanderers.

During his time with Bolton his signings included, Daniel Sturridge (loan), Jack Wilshere (loan), Ivan Klasnic, and Martin Petrov.

Following relegation it was tough for Bolton to return as the club had built up £110m of debts and to put it blunty, the coffers were empty.

The above should give rise to optimism for the season ahead. Coyle has been here and done it before, he's taken Burnley to the top flight and he can do it again for the Latics.

We're different to the scenario when Bolton got relegated as there is money to spare. The legacy of Roberto Martinez is that of cost cutting and money savings.

If the prjected academy doesn't go ahead in Wrightington then there is the £8m N'Zogbia money and £12m Moses money burning a hole in Mr Whelan's pocket, and that's before the sales of any players this summer.

With season tickets continuing to offer excellent value to follow your local club live I would urge every Latics fan to get to the ticket office and renew their seat.

We've lost a superb manager in Roberto Martinez but we have appointed a manager more than capable of getting us back into the top flight.

If our chairman is prepared to back him, then so should we. To use an old phraise, BELIEVE!
