Opinion: Brucie Bonus

The Brucie Bonus to Franco di Santo's last minute tap in is the P45 that may be awaiting Steve Bruce on Monday morning.

Ironically this was a game the Latics probably didn't deserve to win.

For the past nine weeks we have been witness to numerous performances that merited three points but yielded none.

This week we deserved at best a point, but came away with all three. Football is a very strange game.

The script went according to plan with an early goal conceeded by the Latics. But once again, despite our obvious defensive frailties, the character was there.

A soft Victor Moses penalty was converted in cool style by Jordi Gomez and then was the moment that made the long journey worthwhile.

Sunderland defender Wes Brown dallied on the ball and James McArthur robbed him of possession before sliding Franco di Santo in to tap home the winner.

The chorus of boos at the Stadium of Light from the home fans was a clear illustration of the pressure faced by former Latics manager Steve Bruce and is an equal reflection of the support that Wigan Athletic supporters have for their manager.

This one moment at 16.55 on Saturday afternoon epitomised everything great about our football club.

In the office prediction league this week everyone went for a Sunderland win (I work out of Wigan) and I was consistently told how we don't have a hope. The triumph against adversity when we stick together is terrific.

The joy on Martinez and Jones' face when di Santo's effort hit the back of the net was clear to see. It went beyond the reaction of a manager of a football club and was the reaction of a supporter who happens to be in charge of the club.

The entire squad was celebrating the goal on the touchline. They say it is in adversity where you learn the most about those around you and that couldn't be more truthful.

From the supporters, to the manager, to the playing staff, everyone at Wigan Athletic has stuck together over the past few difficult months.

We now face a very tough December with games against some of the top teams in the division. We are going to have to maintain the tin hats and stick together over the winter.

With a bit of luck, and good football of course, we can turn this season around. And what better a game to define the rest of our season than when we put another nail in the coffin of former boss Steve Bruce?

Come on the Latics!
