New Latics boss: The candidates

Last updated : 04 June 2009 By Paul Farrington
Roberto Martinez

First choice in the view of chairman Dave Whelan and the supporters. Martinez has been a whirlwind of a success with Swansea, guiding the Swans to the League on title and then narrowly missing out on the Championship play-offs last time out.

Even more impressive is that fact that Martinez has not spent buckets of cash and has his team playing attractive football with an undoubted Spanish flair.

The only stumbling block is the excessive compensation being requested by Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins who is risking alienting his manager and halting his progress up the managerial ladder.

Darren Ferguson

The Posh boss has been a big hit at London Road after guiding his side to back to back promotions, and all this in his first two seasons as a football manager.

Peterborough chairman Barry Fry said: "We've only had one enquiry and that was from Reading. I'm close to Steve Bruce, he tells me [Swansea's Roberto] Martinez is going to Wigan and I believe Steve Bruce.

"Obviously if anyone comes in from the Premiership it's mega money and all that but no-one has at the minute so until then we'll wait and see."

The 37 year old son of Manchester United boss Sir Alex has been tipped for big things in management and Wigan Athletic could be the next step for him.

Craig Levein

Former Hearts and Leicester City boss Craig Levein has been linked with the club by a number of websites.

The 44 year old is currently boss of Dundee United in the SPL where he has been a success. United finished the present season in fifth place, and just outside a European spot.

Despite being a success North of the border, English football supporters will find it hard to forget his unsuccessful period in charge of Leicester City who dropped down to League One shortly after his departure.

Paul Jewell

Undoubtedly had his biggest success in management with the Latics and left the club at the right time.

After guiding the club to the top flight from League One, Jewell then went on to keep the Latics in the top flight with a very impressive tenth place finish and a cup final appearance to boot.

The following season was somewhat of a struggle as the club fought to survive and only a final day victory over Sheffield United maintained the Premiership status.

Jewell has also had success with Bradford City prior to his appointment at the JJB Stadium. He guided the Bantams to the top flight and similarly managed to keep them in the division with a special victory over Liverpool, before a fall out with the chairman led to his resignation.

Since leaving the Latics Jewell has a spell with Derby County which proved less successful. With the club as good as already relegated, Jewell struggled to tame his fighting spirit and the club went down without batting an eye-lid before struggling again in hte Championship the following season.

Despite his success with the Latics, many supporters believe that Jewell would be a step backwards in time. A fresh, young, upcoming manager is what the supporters are hoping for at present.

Paul Ince

A former Manchester United colleague of departing manager Steve Bruce, Ince has been a success during his short managerial career to date.

He has guided the Macclesfield away from the relegation zone in 2007 and then took the MK Dons to the League Two title in 2008 with former Latics boss Ray Mathias as his assistant.

Forty-one year old Ince is said to be desperate for a chance to get back on the managerial ladder with a Premiership oppportunity right at hte top of his wish list. However his struggles with Blackburn would put off any potential offer from the Latics.

Gordon Strachan

After quitting Celtic at the end of last season, Strachan is now looking for another opportunity to get back into football management.

Another former Manchester United player, Strachan, 52, would be the man to appoint should Whelan be looking for an experienced boss.

Steve Coppell

Another experienced head and another former Manchester United player, Coppell resigned from Reading at the end of last season after failing to guide the Royals back to the Premiership.

A manager who choses not to work under the confines of a contract - something that many appeal to Whelan - Coppell was certainly successful and much loved amongst Reading supporters.
