Comment: A few home truths post Blackpool

Last updated : 27 August 2009 By Paul Farrington
It was not acceptable.

This was not Blackpool's first choice eleven, they had made SEVEN changes from their previous starting eleven and still managed to dominate the game.

The game started poorly with the Latics second to near enough every single ball and Blackpool looking the more dangerous of the two sides.

He may well have sounded like a high proof Russian drink but Demontagnac rifled in the opening goal from 20 yards after being given a ridiculous amount of time to turn, take aim and rifle his shot past Mike Pollitt.

Instead of sparking the team into life, things seemed to go from bad to worse. Martinez was motionless on the touchline as he watched his players lie down and roll over for pool.

The Tangerines were playing in s similar form to Wolves at the DW Stadium just over a week ago. They fought for every ball and out battled the Latics all over the pitch.

Ben Burgess added a second goal after another poor pass from the Latics in midfield. The big strikers half hit shot was allowed to creep in past Mike Pollitt who appeared to make a mess of it.

A penalty from Charlie Adam after Watson gave the ball away in midfield, and a well taken finish from Taylor-Fletcher compunded the Latics to four goals.

Amaya snatched back a consolation for Wigan at the end with a well taken header, but by then 90% of the Wigan crowd had left.

Post game analysis

Ian Holloway hit the nail on the head when he told Radio Lancashire after the game that the Latics simply didn't fancy it and the players were not carrying out the manager's instructions.

The passing was woeful and the movement up front was even worse.

I was particularly worried by the lack of a change after going one goal down. The team just carried on as before with Martinez watching on, arms folded, unanimated, as his team bounced down to a three-nil half time deficit.

The passing was poor, and again replicated that on show against Wolves were it was too much sideways action on the edge of our own area and little penetration of the opposition defence.

The wingers were too wide and far up the pitch which left the core of team isolated and at risk from the counter attack. Diame and Watson were over-run in the centre of the park, but the latter was disgusting in his attitude.

Watson epitimised the lack of spirit and desire shown by the Latics as he plodded around midfield disconslolate and uninterested. It wasn't the performance on a player trying to win himself a position in the first eleven. Every pass went astray, he was lazy, off the pace and his passing was comedy.

The useless trio: King, Watson and Scotland can't work out what to do with the white pigs skin near their feet

Whilst he was possibly the worst, he wasn't alone as both Marlon King and Jason Scotland joined him with their "performances".

King in particular may has well have spent 90 minutes stood corresponding with the corner flag about the off colour Tangerine seats. He spent the game pottering around up front, more interested in hiding behind his marker, than showing the Latics fans what he can really do.

A very bad day at the office for Wigan, but it has worried the fans that travelled as Martinez spent 90 minutes watching things go from bad to worse and failed to make the necessary changes.

Perhaps he was testing the character of his players, if he was, he has learned that a few of them may as well be snails for the level of speed and backbone they showed last night.

Whilst you can forgive a player for not being good enough, but putting in a good shift. It is just not acceptable for international and Premier League players to put in performances like that.

Player ratings

Mike Pollitt 3 - Not his best performance and guilty of letting in some soft goals. A good penalty save, but as ever a Blackpool player reached the loose ball first to fire home.

Emmerson Boyce 3 - He always struggles at right back as his ability going forward in somewhat limited. Seemed to lack desire which is very unusual.

Erik Edman 2 - A disgusting performance from Edman who must still be recovering from his knee injury. The Swedish international looked a good yard off the pace.

Paul Scharner 5- It was a sad state of affairs for Scharner who was left to hold the team together from the back. A crediable performance.

Alberto Amaya 5 - The big Spanish defender looked slow to start but it was his debut. Once adjust he looked assured in possession and relatively commanding in the air. Scored a good goal at the end with a free header.

Scoot Sinclair 6 - One of the few players to come away with a positive air. A solid performance from the Chelsea loanee who looked dangerous with his direct attacking running.

James McCarthy 5 - The youngster still looked slightly off the pace and is certainly in need of improvement but there were positive signs.

Mo Diame 5 - A quiet performance from the commanding midfielder who was given a lot of work to do as the Latics wingers and Watson offered him little defensive help.

Ben Watson 0 - What a waste of time. I was absolutely fuming at the game with Watson. He gave the ball away readily and looked uninterested in the game. In particular the third and fourth Blackpool goals came after he gave the ball away and then proceeded to amble back with no desire. Disgusting performance.

Jason Scotland 1 - Another player to put in a pathetic performance. He looked overweight, lazy and well short of quality. A duff signing by Roberto unless significant improvement is seen soon.

Marlon King 0 - The second complete waste of space in the Wigan line up. Despite all the pre game talk from Martinez, King was uniterested and spent the enitre 90 minutes trying to hide behind his marker. The sooner he is out hte door the better for everyone.

Subs

Hugo Rodallega 6 - When Hugo came on out wide for McCarthy he looked a real breath of fresh air as he continually breezed past his marker. Certainly in a different league to Scotland and King.

Hendry Thomas 6 - Didn't get too involved in the game but managed to hold a defensive shield in place despite the worst efforts of his midfield team mate Watson.

Conclusion

A big learning curve hopfully for Martinez. He now knows that Watson, Scotland and King are not interested, whilst Edman is not a patch on Maynor Figueroa.

McCarthy is not up to Premiership speed and Emmerson Boyce is not a right back.

On the positive side, Scott Sinclair is better than Jason Koumas and... that's about it really.

Everton away on Sunday needs to be a polar opposite of this performance.
