Twenty Questions: Manchester United

Last updated : 23 February 2006 By Paul Farrington
Tammy from ManUtdonline.org, David Bowery and Terry Gallagher all answered our twenty questions. Please see their answers below. Thanks a lot for the information chaps.

Tammy - manutdonline.org

1) Who are you, where are you from and how long have you supported your club?

Tammy, living in Canterbury at the moment. Been supporting the team since the mid 90s (granted I was born in '85), but really got into the United spirit about 5 years ago when I started the site as well.

2) What was your first game?

I'm rather ashamed to say I've never actually been to a proper live match. I did go see them when they went on their Asia tour a few years ago.

3) Describe your most memorable game?

Definitely the 1999 Champions League final. Could it get any better?

4) The worst game?

In recent memory, losing 3-1 to Man City.

Denis Law
5) The best and worst players you've seen?

Peter Schmeichel and Eric Cantona are two of my favourites that I've seen. Mark Hughes, Denis Irwin, Jaap Stam, Roy Keane. For sure there are other absolute legends like Denis Law, George Best, Duncan Edwards but those were way before my time.

6) Who are your local rivals and why?

Definitely Man City. Liverpool are creeping up the list as well what with all the commotion about the celebrations.

7) How did you fare last season?

Any time United dont win a trophy or the premiership for that matter, its always going to be a dissapointing season for the fans and players. Last season I think the FA Cup final was a big let down for us especially to lose out to Arsenal on penalties having held our own for the entire game.

8) Where do you want to finish this season?

Obviously a Premiership win would've been top of the priority at the beginning of the season, but now that United are out of the Champions League and the FA Cup, I can realistically only see the Carling Cup as our only consolation.

9) Do you expect to beat 'little Wigan'?

Wigan had a decent start at the beginning of the season and are sitting comfortably in the top 10. I dont think United can afford to be complacent or Wigan will give them a good run for their money.

10) If United were a TV personality, who would they be?

Tough question, I would say an A-list celebrity back in the day who is currently trying to get back on their two feet and bask in glory once again.

11) What is your opinion of Wigan Athletic?

To be honest, I was pretty surprised at the start Wigan had at the beginning of the season. It was quite refreshing to see another team near the top of the table besides the regular few.

Stephane Henchoz
12) Which current, or former Wigan players have impressed you?

I would have to say top scorer Jason Roberts and probably ex-Liverpool man Stephane Hencoz.

13) Anyone who we should look out for in your team?

If Fergie is all out to win this cup (and I think he should) Wayne Rooney, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo would be the obvious tro to look out for. Also Giggsy could still produce a couple of fine runs.

14) Which team do you want to beat most this season and why?

Most probably Chelsea. A loss for them would mean more points for us to blatantly put it.

15) Greatest ever United player?

I would have to go with Denis Law. Peter Schmeichel would be my close second.

16) Favourite current player and why?

Wayne Rooney would have to be it. The boy is magic and at such a young age, he could go on to be an absolute legend. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also holds a special place in my heart firstly for that winning goal in 99, but more importantly for his loyalty to the club, his professionalism and his effort
whenever he plays. Plus, you gotta love a guy who gets a standing ovation from the fans despite getting sent off for a last ditch tackle to save the game. (United vs Newcastle if anyone remembers!)

17) What sort of line-up can we expect from you?

If I had my way, it would be Saha and Nistelrooy up front with Giggs, Rooney, Park and Ronaldo in the middle. If all goes well and we're way ahead in the game, Ole having a run out towards the end would be a dream, but that's just me.

18) You beat us at Old Trafford, are you confident?

4-0 was a comfortable win the last time but I think there is more pressure this time on United to stave off a second successive campaign without a trophy and perhaps that could play a major factor in the way the team perform.

19) Where abouts will you be sat?

Right in front of my tv cheering United on.

20) Prediction?

Close game but United to win 2-1

David Bowery

1) Who are you, where are you from and how long have you supported your club?

Barge from Wigan. I have supported United all my life (27yrs) as my Dad and Grandad went to Old Trafford so it was natural that I followed suit. I've have been going to games since 1987.

2) What was your first game?

Coventry City, FA Cup 4th Round 1987 at Old Trafford. United lost 1-0 to the eventual winners.

3) Describe your most memorable game?

Blackburn Rovers (H) May 3rd 1993, the night we lifted the league title for the first time in 26 years.

4) The worst game?

Liverpool (A) April 26th 1992, the day we finally lost the league to the scum that is Leeds United. There cant be a worst place than Anfield to see your dreams go up in smoke.

Eric Cantona
5) The best and worst players you've seen?

Best - Cantona, pure class. Worst - David Bellion, pure shite.

6) Who are your local rivals and why?

Rivalries, I believe, are all about fans. Forget the battles with Arsenal, Chelsea, Blackburn, Newcastle, etc. over the years because these rivalries have only arisen due to the fact that those teams are/have been United's main challengers for honours. They may be the main rivals in the
eyes of the players but not the fans.

City and Liverpool are the local rivals but Leeds are certainly on a par with them in the eyes of many reds. City are our rivals due to the location and the fact that our success when compared to their spectacular failures make them what they are - Bitter!

Liverpool? Well, don't believe the shite that is peddled by the press about loveable scousers. For instance, at Anfield last week the filthy scum were throwing shit (yes SHIT) in coffee cups from the 2nd tier of Anfield Road onto the reds in the away section, songs such as "Are you watching Georgie
Best?" and "John Arne Riise, ooh ahh, I wanna know how you broke his leg?" were getting a good airing.

Plus the fact that the ambulance taking Alan Smith to hospital was attacked by people coming from a pub in Anfield shows them for what they are.

7) How did you fare last season?

Pretty shite by United standards. 3rd in the league, FA Cup runners up, Champions League last 16, and Carling Cup Semi-Finalists.

8) Where do you want to finish this season?

Top of the league, but it aint gonna happen!

9) Do you expect to beat "little Wigan"?

Yes but as you've shown this season, you certainly will not be a pushover.

10) If United were a TV personality, who would they be?

No idea, but it'd be someone who everyone hates but watches nonetheless just to see if they'll mess up.

11) What is your opinion of Wigan Athletic?

Good team that works extremely hard for each other.

Jimmy Bullard
12) Which current, or former Wigan players have impressed you?

Jason Roberts and Jimmy Bullard.

13) Anyone who we should look out for in your team?

Rooney and Ruud. They deserve better quality around them than they have
at the moment.

14) Which team do you want to beat most this season and why?

Liverpool. No explanation needed.

15) Greatest ever United player?

I can only speak for the players that I have seen so my answer is Cantona.

16) Favourite current player and why?

Gary Neville because he plays with the passion that all United players should have. If we had more with the attitude of Gary Nev, we'd not be in the state we are now.

17) What sort of line-up can we expect from you?

Hopefully.....Van Der Sar, Neville, Evra, Brown, Ferdinand, Ronaldo, Park, Giggs, Rooney, Saha, Van Nistelrooy however Fergie has a tendancy play a lot of players out of position and make inexplicable changes to winning teams so it's really hard to say!

18) You beat us at Old Trafford, are you confident?

Not as much as you may think because if we cant get up for an FA cup tie at Anfield you start to wonder whether we'll be sufficiently motivated for Wigan.

19) Where abouts will you be sat?

(I'll answer for both games - league and cup) Cardiff - I'm in the lower
tier of the South stand in the corner. JJB - in the North stand

20) Prediction?

Carling Cup - 3-2 United.....League - 1-0 United

Thanks for your time David.

Terry Gallagher

1) Who are you, where are you from and how long have you supported your club?
My name is Terry Gallagher, born Dublin 06/04/50, moved to Manchester when I was 2 in 1953. Started going to United every game with my dad and uncle in 1961/62. I missed quite a few games between 1970 and 1972, through work, but started going again regular in 1973.

2) What was your first game?

Not sure of exact first game, though I am told it was a European game V Shamrock Rovers, at Old Trafford, in 1957. I remember one game in particular from my early days. A European game V Athletic Bilbao, which was played at Maine Road, as Old Trafford didn't have floodlights then. It was the Busby Babes, and the crowd that night was so loud, it was awesome. I'm proud to have seen the great Busby Babes.

3) Describe your most memorable game?

United V Benfica, European Cup final at Wembley, 1968. Magic! And also the Champions League Final in Barcelona, 1999. What a night! And also against Coventry when we picked up the first league championship in 26 years in 1993/94. There was a classic game against West Brom in 1978 when we won 5-3. The most emotional would have been the cup match against Sheffield Wednesday at Old Trafford in February 1958. It was the first game after Munich, and even though I was only 8, I can remember the hysteria of that night, with the replacement palyers, and many people openly crying. It has stayed with me.

4) The worst game?

For me, personally it was probably getting relegated by Man City and a Denis Law backheel in 1974. Also getting walloped 5-0 at Newcastle in circa 1997. Though I am sure there were plenty worse in the 80's and mid 70's!

5) The best and worst players you've seen?

Eric Cantona was probably the best I have seen. His sheer prescence and audacity were unbelievable. Then, obviously Bobby Charlton. As I have mentioned, I was lucky enough to have seen the "Babes" play, though it is a bit vague 40 years later, I do have an image of Duncan Edwards running over to our side to take a throw in. I can see it now. He was very strong. Big muscles. A great player. What a shame that Munich happened. I did see Georgie Best too, an absolute genious. Paul Scholes is as good as anybody I've seen wear the red too. I liked the centre half, Jim Holton, who played in the 70's also. The worst? Garry Birtles was a flop, and I was never that keen on Alan Brazil, personally. Massimo Taibi, the Italian goalie, was a nightmare. Too many bad ones to mention, I think!

Jason Roberts
6) Who are your local rivals and why?

Traditionally, it is City, of course! Some would say Bolton too, but I think it is mainly THEY who hate us! They've never got over the fact that when they beat us in the Cup Final in 1958, they didn't get much credit, as they had beaten a patched up and raw United team, after Munich. Also, of course there is a big rivalry with Liverpool, but again, I think it is they who hate us more than we hate them. Jealousy? Maybe.

7) How did you fare last season?

It just wasn't good enough. A trophy less season at United is a failure by any means.

8) Where do you want to finish this season?

Realistically, Chelsea have it sewn up really. Our main battle is with the Scousers for second place. Has Abramovich ruined the Premier League? Possibly, but you wouldn't turn all that cash down, would you?

9) Do you expect to beat 'little Wigan'?

Yes, though not as easy at Old Trafford. We are missing Scholes, and are seriously lacking a midfield prescence. It is all on the day. United were that much classier than Wigan at Old Trafford, but you never know in a final.

10) If United were a TV personality, who would they be?

At the minute, they'd be Kerry Katona. All 'up front' but not a lot in the middle at the moment.

11) What is your opinion of Wigan Athletic?

A club that has made massive progress and shocked everyone.

12) Which current, or former Wigan players have impressed you?

Obviously Rooney is class, as is Van Nistelrooy. Then you have the trickery of Ronaldo on the wing. They are the dangermen, I think.

13) Anyone who we should look out for in your team?

The three previously mentioned, plus maybe Giggs.

14) Which team do you want to beat most this season and why?

Obviously City and Liverpool for traditional rivalry. But if I'm honest, Wigan in Cardiff. It's our last chance of a trophy.

15) Greatest ever United player?

Duncan Edwards, George Best, Bobby Charlton, Eric Cantona, Denis Law. Any of them.

16) Favourite current player and why?

Wayne Rooney. He is a great player and can be for many years. Strong, skilfulm and scored goals.

17) What sort of line-up can we expect from you?

As per the line up we had V Liverpool, except Saha may start with Rooney going in to Midfield. Ferdinand may well return, and Evra may start.

18) You beat us at Old Trafford, are you confident?
Yes, but I don't think it will be a walkover.

19) Where abouts will you be sat?

Middle tier behind the goal. £46 seats.

20) Prediction?

3-1 to United. 1-0 half time, 1-1, 2-1, 3-1 late on.

Extra tip - By the way, here's a tip for you Wigan lads. Your pubs will be pre designated by the Police. They will be at your end of the stadium. The best bet for you pre match is the CITY ARMS pub. Just opposite the stadium gate 2.

Thanks Terry, some cracking answers, and thanks for the tip!
