Wigan Athletic 3 St Mirren 1

Today was the day that the three amigo's were reunited following their initial arival in England back in 1995.

Both Isidro Diaz and Jesus Seba seemed pleased to see former colleague Roberto Martinez doing so well in his career as they were cheered by the Latics fans.

Martinez started with a familar back four made up of Mario Melchiot, Titus Bramble, Emmerson Boyce and Erik Edman playing in front of Chris Kirkland.

In midfield, Lee Cattermole and Michael Brown held the central holding roles with Jordi Gomes given more license in front of them.

Jason Koumas started on the left flank with Charles N'Zogbia on the right flank, and up front Hugo Rodallega ploughed a lone furrow.

Before the game, Martinez had been talking up the power of the St Mirren who were expected to provide a sturn test. In reality the SPL side focussed on defending and trying to keep the score down, this made for a somewhat drab game.

The Latics did however start brightly and it is clear that Martinez is indeed going to employ a much more aesthetic style of football to that played under Steve Bruce.

The first fifteen minutes were exhibition football with Wigan holding posession without creating too many oppotunities of note.

Jason Koumas opened the scoring with a free kick into the top corner from 25 yards.

The lead was short lived though as a mix up between Titus Bramble and Emmerson Boyce led to the latter falling on his backside before Craig Cargo netted for St Mirren.

Martinez gave his clearest indication that this is his favoured eleven as the same players emerged from the tunnel after the break.

Four minutes later and Rodallega put the Latics back in the lead with another free kick.

However the cream on the cake was Mario Melchiot's spectactular over head kick just before the hour mark after St Mirren failed to clear from a corner.

Then came the precession of substitutes as Martinez gave the home crowd of just over 5,000 the chance to see the new signings.

Amongst those on show were powerful striker Jason Scotland and Scott Sinclair who is on loan from Chelsea. The familiar faces of Paul Scharner and Ben Watson were also given a run out.

Clearly Aston Villa will be much more difficult next Saturday and the Latics will have to erradicate the school boy errors at the back.

It will be an interesting season for the Latics as the quiet Roberto Martinez revolution continues. Time will tell if he can mould the Latics into a delightful passing team.

On view of the game though, the jury is still out and the players need more time to become familiar with one another and the new style of play.
