All too often this season we have been unlucky, so close, mentally not prepared, physically weak, tactically out-played. It doesn't bode well for the Latics who were far off the pace in too many areas of the pitch against West Ham.
The Hammers had won just one other game so far this season and yet they walked all over a Latics team that was devoid of determiantion and desire for the shirt.
Jordi Gomez, Mauro Boselli, Momo Diame, Ronnie Stam, Maynor Figueroa, Steven Caldwell, Gary Caldwell, and Ben Watson are not going to keep this team in the top flight.
The Latics are being carried by a handful of competant players who are all dreaming of a big January move from the sinking ship.
It is clear to see the plan that Roberto Martinez has for the Latics, and it is clear to see that this is a good long term plan that will help the club be the best it can be. However the short term needs some immediate focus.
I felt embarassed to see Scott Parker shrug off a half-hearted Ben Watson as he got to the ball first to put the Hammers three up. This moment epitomised the difference between the two sides.
The was no gulf in quaility, just a gulf in motivation. If we don't address this in the big games against those clubs around us, we are going to go down.
Blackpool, Fulham, Blackburn, and now West Ham. Four games were we have rolled over against those teams who we should be beating or at least winning a point.
Instead we are focussing on the games against the clubs are the top end of the table, and still losing those games.
This is not a sack Martinez plea, this is rather a plea that the Spaniard use his brain a little bit more and focus on the right games, rather than the headline grabbing games.
Annoyingly in the way this week is the Carling Cup tie with Arsenal that will no doubt offer some much needed release from the rigours of a poor league campaign. But the forthcoming visit of Stoke City next weekend is the important one.
Perhaps some what ironic after the events at Upton Park this week, but is Stoke on Saturday our 'Save our season' game?
Here is the reaction of the two managers.
Roberto Martinez
It was a very disappointing afternoon. Nothing went our way and we paid for that. I don't think we started the game with our normal energy levels and purpose, and in a game that we all knew was hugely important and significant, we allowed ourselves to be open at the back.
The three goals we conceded were very cheap, especially the first one, and that was always going to have a big say on the match. We couldn't create many problems for them, but there wasn't anything in the game before they scored and that is a real disappointment.
When you're not playing at your best, you're risking the opposition taking advantage of that which they did.
The second half was much the same, and the two goals were very self-inflicted. We put ourselves into situations where we allowed the opposition to score simple goals, and that is very disappointing.
Even after going 3-0 down, we scored a very good goal and we had another disallowed at the end that shouldn't have been disallowed.
We were missing five players but I felt we could have coped a little bit better, and there are many things that we must improve.
Tom's goal was a great finish. He showed great technique, and he was again very influential in the game. The first goal gave West Ham something to hold on to and something to fight for, and we made things difficult for ourselves.
Avram Grant
I think, if you look at the performances before the Liverpool game it was the same kind of display like today, but we were more efficient. We defended well except for their goal and the penalty, but for me it was the same performance. We are playing well for most of the games. Everybody feels that we deserve more, but we need to do our job. When we do the right things, the points will start coming. Scotty has been unbelievable for us this season. He is doing everything. He wins balls, he wins tackles, he takes on shots and he scores goals. We weren't sure whether he was going to make it today but I would say he has a good old English mentality.
