The former Walsall striker was taken to Vicarage Road by now Latics boss Malky Mackay and the striker scored a brace to seal a 2-1 win.

Speaking after the game Deeney said: “I was annoyed with the way I was playing but the goals are coming now, so it is good on that front so hopefully I’m making up for lost time. It is all about the team winning though.

“I was giving the ball away too much, it was just one of those games where things weren’t coming off for me.”

There was also praise for Ikechi Anya who has been providing an excellent service to the striker.

“Ikechi has done well for the first one, it was a left foot swing from me. I don’t swing a left foot too often so I was glad it went in," added Deeney.

“If I didn’t score the second I shouldn’t be a striker. It was a bread and butter chance.”
