"Again we are disappointed to concede from a set piece. I cannot be too critical of the players, its not nice losing by any score. But the five games we've just had would have tested any team.

"We've come through it and haven't got any points, but we will try and learn from it. We are in a tough league and these games won't come any tougher.

"We have to be careful that we don't start thinking that the Charlton game will be easy, because it will be anything but easy. Certainly anything we got out of the last three games would have been a bonus and we have taken nothing out of them.

"We played OK for periods here but we have been playing against world-class players. Although we had a couple of half chances early on but they're a world-class team.

Wayne Rooney of Manchester United
"I thought the players and they kept trying, but once it got to two-nil it was always going to be tough, and then it was just damage limitation. But the players didn't throw the towel in, they kept going."

Sir Alex Ferguson

"We produced some great football and I thought we played absolutely superbly for 25 minutes of the second half. The second goal settled us down and brought confidence to the team.

"Their goalkeeper Mike Pollitt had an outstanding game and made three or four great saves and in fairness they were the better side in the last fifteen minutes.

"Overall, I'm very pleased with the performance and the result."

Wayne Rooney

"We wanted to give a good performance and get the three points. We did that and it was a deserved win."

While with regard to the penalty that would have given him his hat trick, Rooney added: "Ruud takes the penalties and there is nothing wrong with that."
