Tottenham Reaction: We made mistakes

Last updated : 16 April 2007 By Paul Farrington
Despite taking the lead three times, the Latics couldn't hold on for a precious three points, and had to settle for just the one in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Tottenham.

The disappointing factor was the lack of attacking play after going one goal up. Each time after taking the lead, the Latics insisted on defending rather than searching for a second.

Surely this play is the reason why, despite dominating games for the large part, Paul Jewell's men just cannot hold onto a lead.

It has happened in the last three matches now, and despite Emile Heskey's one man mission up front and Denny Landzaat's heroics in midfield, it seems as though the team will struggle to hold out for the win.

Here's the reaction of the two manager's.

Paul Jewell

"If you score three goals you expect to win, but the manner in the way we conceded our goals is very, very disappointing.

"However, I thought that was as good as we have played for a long time going forward. Berbatov and Keane were brilliant, but you have got to make them work hard for their goals, and we didn't.

"We made mistakes and got severely punished today, but the point we got today might just be the one that keeps us up.

"I felt that we could catch them cold after they played on Thursday, and I thought we did that, but we let them back in within minutes and we never had long enough to use the advantage.

"I did not have a good view of the penalty, but there were not many complaints in the dressing room at half-time. I was more disappointed with how the penalty came about when we had a corner and they broke very quickly on us.

"We cannot keep dwelling on how many leads we have lost to teams at this stage in hte season. I am more interested in getting more points than three of teams in this division."

Martin Jol

"We could have made it a bit easier on ourselves but it must have been a terrific game for the neutrals. We would have liked to have gone ahead but we conceded three goals, the first goal after just a minute and that wasn't ideal because they might have been fresher than us after we played on Thursday.

"We showed great resilience and we've done that all season. We wanted to win the game, we didn't want to settle for a point but afterwards, if you've concede two goals from set-pieces, you have to."
