Swansea Reaction: Martinez refuses to throw in the towel

The Latics boss was unhappy with his teams performance against Swansea and with the FA Cup Final looming on Saturday needs to pick his players up.

Speaking after the 3-2 home defeat to his former club, Swansea, Martinez said: “The dressing room was really down afterwards. But the FA Cup will prepare us mentally and emotionally for the last two games.

“We are not throwing the towel in as a football club. We need to see the next three games as fantastic opportunities. We’ve done it before and we can do it now and that’s the attitude and way we are going to the final two league games.”

If the Latics are to have a hope of survival then two wins from the final two games, against Arsenal (away) and Aston Villa (home) are a must.

That would be difficult enough, but with a congested fixture list and a lengthy list of injuries it will be difficult.

Chief among the problems against Swansea was the inability to defend, a fact not unnoticed by Martinez.

“We have to accept that we shot ourselves in the foot,” the Spaniard said. “And because of that the players could not be themselves. The amount of injuries we’ve had has not helped us.”
