Sunderland Reaction: Martinez delighted with victory

Here is the reaction of the two managers.

Roberto Martinez

I feel this can be a defining moment in our season. It has to be.

Last week I thought was a real turning point in terms of the way we performed, and if you look at the two points we dropped you see where that would put us in the table.

We simply carried on where we left off last week.

It was a completely different type of performance, but we showed a real maturity to know what to do to win the game.

The season for us started last week and the competition for places we have now should give us the belief and the desire to move on from this.

Throughout the bad run we never lost our standards, and that's very important.

Remember that we are not fighting to get away from the bottom of the league - we are fighting to try and get more points than we got last season.

That will be a long process, but it should give every Wigan Athletic supporter hope for the future.

Steve Bruce

I have never given up on anything, certainly not in football anyway.

Certainly, my intention is not to walk away or quit. That's certainly not in my nature either.

There's something in me which says I will try to turn it around.

We are finding it very, very difficult at the moment. Patience in football doesn't last very long, but as far as my future is concerned, that's up to others.

Certainly I have got no intention of walking away or trying to quit or anything like that. It's certainly not in my nature.

In terms of sticking with it and staying at it, I am certainly more determined than ever to see it through because I don't think we are that far away.
