Firstly could we begin with offering our sympathies to the family and friends of Jimmy Davis who died in a road accident on the M40 while travelling to make his debut for first division Watford whom he joined on a season long loan last month.

Bromsgrove-born Davis made his first team debut for Man Utd two years ago against Arsenal in the Worthington Cup, and scored three teams in a loan spell with second division Swindon last season.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was amongst the first to pay tribute to the youngster.

He said: "You could not meet a nicer and more bubbly character than Jimmy Davis.

"He was a player with real potential, that's why we sent him to Watford this season. At 21 he had great promise. We are all really sad. It's terrible news."

Swindon Town Chairman Willie Carson fought back tears as he recalled Davis' spell at the County Ground last season.

He said: "Swindon fans gave him a standing ovation, he wanted to come back but Manchester United said: `you're a talented lad, you need to be playing in the first division.`

"(It is a) terrific loss to football. e was) so young, so much to offer. I'm sorry for the family because this boy was a lovely kid."

Big results today in the First Division are the 3-1 defeat of Crewe by Wimbledon, Stoke's 3-0 away win at Derby County and of course not forgetting Paul Merson's double in his sides 4-1 demolition of favourites West Brom.

Crystal Palace got off to a flying start at Turf Moor with Freedman scoring a 6th minute penalty. The lead only lasted for five minutes with Robbie Blake equalising for Burnley.

Lee Roche signed from Manchester United over the summer then made it 2-1 on 19 minutes.

Freedman proceeded to equalise on 32 minutes and completed his hat-trick on 67 minutes.

This result came despite Palace having Routledge and Derry sent off.

Stoke City managed a miracle 3-0 away win at The County Ground. Goals from Noel-Williams, Greenacre and Neal sealed the win for Tony Pulis' team.

Paul Merson celebrates one of his stunning goals today.
Result of the day however came for Walsall. They managed to beat title favourites West Brom 4-1. Paul Merson scored two absolute screamers on 18 and 32 minutes before Leitao and Steve Corica finished the Baggies off on 45 and 57 respectively.

Jason Koumas scored a consolation goal for the Baggies.

Disapointingly Wigan fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Millwall at the Den. Full Report on the way shortly.
