Reaction to the Final

"At 1-0 we've got half a chance, and their 'keepers made a really good save from Henri Camara. Then when it went 2-0 we went chasing the game and we got punished by giving daft goals away.

"Goals change football matches and had Camara put that one in, then you never know. I thought we did OK in the first half, but we are up against a better team. They are still one of the best teams in Europe.

"We knew it was going to be very difficult and we had to play at our optimum and hope they had an off day. We gave everything but they were just too good for us on the day.

"But I cannot be critical of our players because this year we've been beaten by Manchester United in the final, and last year we were beaten by Grimsby in this competition, so we have come a long way.

"Congratulations to them because they deserve to win, our players gave everything they had, but just on the day it wasn't good enough.

"I feel really sorry for Pollitt, because after just two minutes into what is arguably the biggest game of his life, he does his hamstring in. it's really disappointing for the lad.

"But I think Filan was unlucky for the second goal, he's made a great save. It is disappointing, but I am proud of the players, proud of my team, and proud of my staff and proud of the supporters.

"Wigan Athletic have won this season whatever happens now because we would have taken 17th place, but now we're eighth in the Premiership."

Arjan De Zeeuw

"I feel pretty awful. People say it's nice to be in a final, but when you get here you want to win it.

"We set out in the second half to have a right go, but we made critical errors at the back and we were punished for it. When you're here you want to win the trophy, but we were nowhere near that and we're very disappointed."

Alex Ferguson

"I thought the scoreline was unfair on Wigan. They never stopped having a go and they had a few good attacking moments, but we got in some great blocks and Edwin (van der Sar) made one great save.

"When we had to defend we did so very well, but we put in a good attacking performance and that won us an important trophy.

"Ryan Giggs has said that when (in 1992) we beat Nottingham Forest in the final of this competition it set us up for a very good spell. If we can now keep this group of players together they can hopefully match our exploits of the past."

Wayne Rooney

"I was disappointed that I hadn't scored for a while. I wanted to put it right and I guess there is no better time to do it than in a Cup Final.

"I'm absolutely delighted that I've started winning trophies. I remember the disappointment of losing the FA Cup final last year, so you can understand how happy I am now - it's one of the best feelings I've ever had."

Gary Neville

"We were devastated last week. After Alan picked up a really bad injury we knew he couldn't be here today, so this is for Smudger."
