"Although we've lost today, I think the Premiership has been a winner. The players and the club can be proud that they have been involved in such a good game. It's four years ago today since we played Canvey Island and got beat one-nil so we have come a long way.

Paul Jewell: Wigan showed great character
"We have been on a great run and it has been ended by arguably, on their day, the best side in Europe.

"We have had to be intense and hard working but amongst all that we have some decent players as well. I looked at the clock and after eleven minutes I don't think they had been in our half really. We had two or three good half chances by that point but then they've gone and scored in what was not really a chance.

"When they scored the second I thought this was going to be a real test, but we've passed it as far a character was concerned. We got back in the game, they scored again, and then we got back in the game again.

"We pushed them all the way. We have to try and take that performance through to the rest of the season.

"Everyone has been waiting for the bubble to burst, but the test for us is after 38 games, not sixteen or seventeen. If we survive in this league then we will have passed every test you can think of, because that was our goal at the start of the season."

Arsene Wenger

"I feel we have been mentally and physically tested by a determined, brave Wigan team. At times they caused us a great deal of upset, particularly in the first half, because of their commitment.

"But I feel my team is developing well from game to game and we are becoming a stronger force as the season progresses."
