Reaction to Chelsea defeat

Jose Mourinho and Paul Jewell yesterday
Boss Paul Jewell was upset to lose in such circumstances and if anything, the Latics were the side that deserved all three points.

He said: "Losing like that is very hard to stomach, but at the same time I'm very proud of my players. We rose to the occasion today and if anything it was us who deserved to nick it at the death.

"However, this is the level we are playing at now and when you come up against multi million pound stars they can produce that kind of quality. Jose Mourinho came up to me when the goal went in and told me we didn't deserve that and it was unfair. I wish I'd been able to say to that to him.

"My players were magnificent today and I could not have asked any more from them. We've shown we can compete, as I always knew we could, and now they need to produce that for the remaining 37 league games.

"We'll be in for training first thing Monday morning and all the focus will be on preparing for Charlton away. We won't be dwelling on the Chelsea game; we'll learn from it and move on.

"This is a brutal league and you have to put both good and bad times behind you immediately. If not the season can pass you by before you know it."

Whilst Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was open about the game and respect for him has increased significantly in the town.

He admitted that his side did not deserve to win and he was not happy with a number of his players.

Mourinho said: "I told my players not to come knocking on my door if they didn't perform. I will make hard decisions if they don't perform.

"I told them I wasn't happy with the situation but we are a group that wins together and loses together.

"We've had a wake-up call without losing the game. I felt sorry for Wigan because they deserved more out of the game. In the second half we responded well because we played a lot better.

"But I didn't think we deserved to win. We didn't deserve to lose, but at times in the first half it was too bad to be true."
