Portsmouth Reaction

"We deserved the victory, I don't think there is any doubt about that. We are in a position where nothing is going to be easy for us, and we've missed five key players today.

"Hopefully we can use this as a springboard, although we are away at Arsenal next week, to try and get four or five more wins before the end of the season.

"In training, the players have really taken the bull by the horns, and we've changed a few things around, to try and pass the ball around a bit more, and play with a bit more confidence, which isn't easy when you're near the bottom.

"I think the players showed great character, and we could have been a couple of goals up at half-time, and once we scored, we looked resolute and I don't remember Portsmouth having to many opportunities.

"Julius Aghahowa didn't even arrive until Thursday as he was doing pre-season with Shakhtar Donetsk, and Caleb Folan has come up two divisions, and I thought the two of them were a threat, and they gave an honest performance, and the beauty about it is they will get better.

"We've made basic errors at the back quite a lot this season, but we've got a clean sheet today. We didn't make any mistakes today, and even if they did, we had somebody else to get them out of jail. It was more a like an old fashioned Wigan performance.

"If we were to be offered fourth from bottom now I would have taken it, although that wasn't what we set out to do at the start of the season. But we are in a fight, no doubt about it, and there are going to be more peaks and troughs before the end of the season.

"The supporters played their part too, they were tremendous and it was a terrific atmosphere. The players needed them today, and the fans stood up to be counted today."

"They played very well, we were poor. We got exactly what we deserved, which was nothing. They were much the better side, they were sharper, hungrier and deserved their win. We started sloppy and never really got going today. It's a poor performance.

"If you aren't going to fight and scrap for every ball, that is the first basics of football - hard work. They outworked us today by miles. We have got to pick it up again. There are a dozen games to go, some big games, and we have got to turn in some good performances and pick up some points.

"Our season isn't suddenly over. We are not going to think that as we are safe we are going to take it easy, that is not the case. One or two of them have started to look tired, and aren't performing as well for whatever reason, and I was disappointed today."
