Newcastle Reaction: Martinez focussing on remaining games

The performance was terrific once again from the Latics who dispatched a very good Newcastle team on the back of six straight wins.

After a remarkable month of results that has included wins over Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, and the latest win over Newcastle, Martinez was keen to highlight a historic moment of form.

"This is the biggest month in the history of our club," Martinez said.

"[We have played] against Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle. In every department of the club we know we need to work really hard to keep our dream alive and that comes with belief. You need to face adversity and I'm proud of how the crowd have helped us through.

"Our aim is to stay in the league and we haven't got enough points.

"We have two big games left, big finals. There will be some surprising results and some big performances. That's the nature of the competition - it's the best league in world. You're never safe, we need as many points as we can. We need to recover well.

"The difference today was that we took our chances. Since early February we had good levels of performance and played really well but you need to take your chances.

"Today we had belief, arrogance, call it what you like. Our finishing was outstanding. The first-half display was as good as against Manchester United - the team showed great maturity and it's a very strong clean sheet. At this stage of the season that's very important.

"We always believed we were going to do it. Now on the pitch we are beating big teams and that gives us a lot of confidence.

"I am happy for the team, the fans and for me to score. It was very, very important for us to be safe. Not yet but every time we win we're closer."

The Latics face Blackburn Rovers on the first Monday in May next week in a game that will be very important for both clubs survival chances.

Tickets are not available for the game as the Latics have already sold out their allocation of 3,000 tickets.
