Newcastle Reaction: Charlie left frustrated

Here is the reaction from those involved.

Roberto Martinez

We are really disappointed with the way the game ended. The performance from the first minute until the last was exactly what we wanted - we scored two outstanding goals and stopped Newcastle being a threat in open play.

Their first goal was soft and we couldn't defend a corner at the end. And that in many ways shows where we are at the moment. We are a very young and very talented group of players but are maybe missing that little bit of know-how, experience and concentration that allows you to hold out for the scores that you deserve.

Overall it was a very, very painful lesson, although the performance on the whole was a positive which will help us in the long term. The two goals we scored in the first half were a clear reward for the superiority we were enjoying at the time.

We did everything we had to do to win the game - apart from defending one corner at the end. We knew they were doing everything they could to get a set-play, and we should have been a little bit more focused and negative in seeing the game out.

It's not just about the back four or the back five but the whole team, and I couldn't see Newcastle creating anything from open play. The most disappointing thing is the players are ending the game with a feeling that they don't deserve after all the hard work they put in.

Chris Hughton

What we have got in this side is great character, that I am aware of. What we are now doing is we are now playing our football in a tougher division. Wigan have become very much an established Premier League side and they showed very much in patches the quality they have got.

We knew we were on the back of two home defeats and that's not something we wanted to continue. We know we are in a tougher division, but this is somewhere that became very much a fortress for us last season.

The only way to get back to anywhere near that, which we know is impossible in this division, is to grind out results in whatever way we have to. We showed great character and quality towards the end to get back into the game.

Charles N'Zogbia

We really played our football in the first half, passing the ball around very well, and deserved to be in front. But perhaps in the second half we sat back a bit too much and invited a bit of the pressure.

When you are winning 2-0, you have to keep going forward – and I think we’ve maybe learned a lesson for the future. Even when you are winning you have to keep going, playing your own game.

We came here determined to do a job and we’re disappointed we couldn’t see it through. They always looked dangerous from corners and crosses, and that’s exactly how they got back into it at the end.

The whole team is disappointed, because we feel like we have given them a point. It was so frustrating to see them equalise at the end, but we have to learn from it and come back stronger next weekend against Bolton.

The visit of Bolton Wanderers to the DW Stadium is next up for the Latics. Owen Coyle will bring his merry bunch on the short trip from Horwich in what should be a tasty North West derby.
